There isn’t much to say today because the pictures should do it. We were not expecting to enjoy this town as much as we have, from delicious food, to engaging views at every turn and stunning vistas of Tuscany when we find a lookout from this perch 1,770 feet above sea level.
We just hope you can all enjoy it one day. And, if you are worried about the vampires, there are no less than nine churches you can duck into within the old city walls.
There is a Roman amphitheatre built cuddled up to the walls, but on the outside so that tells you Volterra was here before the Romans. And, when the Medici’s came along, they built a prison to attempt to show Florence’s power over Volterra – it’s still in use today (can you imagine). Etruscan artifacts that predate the Romans are evident in Volterra, so it likely comes as no surprise that the large Palazzo dei Priori, is the oldest in Tuscany and stands in the centre of the Piazza dei Priori in the heart of Volterra! Now who but vampires would put a huge Palazzo at the top of a giant hill in the days before the Romans? Stephanie Mayer was on to something…just sayin’.
We walk ‘till we can’t anymore, then nap and decide to picnic for supper. We go to the Voterra Coop (seriously) and witness a real Italian buying both frozen and ready-to-bake pizza. We take our salads and sandwiches and find a view where we picnic and enjoy not having to be served.
What a good day! We sleep with garlic around our necks and one eye open. Neither of us have bite marks in the morning ;-)
Sounds like you both are falling in love, might be a return visit planned some day? Love the adventures, love the photos, great way to start every day, Happy Trails, bere vino per noi! xx S&V
